The Robert Treat Paine Estate
100 Robert Treat Paine Drive
Waltham, MA 02452
esigned
in the 19th century by Henry Hobson Richardson and Frederick
Law Olmsted, Stonehurst is the ideal country home of housing
reformer Robert Treat Paine and his family.
At a loss for words, 19th-century visitors to Stonehurst
described the estate as a “marvel and a study.”
Even today, it is not your ordinary historic house museum.
A wide range of guided tours, lectures, school programs and
community events are offered throughout the year. Visitors
may stroll the grounds or hike the woodland trails that wind
through 109 acres of conservation land surrounding the estate.
This innovative home retains its original Victorian furnishings,
paintings, and decorative arts as well as Paine family archives.
Stonehurst, the Robert Treat Paine Estate, and the Storer
Conservation Lands are owned and operated by the City of
Waltham, Massachusetts. The non-profit Robert Treat Paine
Historical Trust works in partnership with the City to preserve
this National Historic Landmark and maintain it as an educational
resource for a broad audience.

he
Robert Treat Paine Estate (1883-1886) is the crowning achievement
of the career-long collaboration of architect Henry Hobson
Richardson and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted,
the most renowned designers of their era. Richardson and
Olmsted set lasting precedents in the U.S. by intimately
connecting the home to its site, merging the shingle style
with the natural topography, geology and plantings.
Described as the pinnacle achievement of Shingle Style architects
and craftsmen, its interiors anticipate the flowing spaces,
open planning and multifunctional living areas of 20th-century
architecture. It is the most intact example of Richardson’s
innovative approach to country house design and the only
one that is open to the public.
